Eye Camps

 
Around four medical and eye camps are conducted every month in different parts of southern and eastern coastal areas and villages to provide free medical services to poor and vulnerable senior citizens.Doctors examine patients and conduct necessary medical tests. Patients are then provided with free medication. Along side the medical camps, eye check ups for new spectacles and cataract eye operations are also carried out by qualified doctors. Patients qualifying for cataract
operations receiveassistance at the HelpAge Sri Lanka Eye Hospital in Colombo. The operations if done privately would cost the patients Rs. 25,000/= plus expenses for drugs after surgery.

Eye Hospital offering free eye care for senior citizens
     
The Eye Hospital of HelpAge Sri Lanka based in Nugegoda, provides eye care for poor and vulnerable senior citizens in the country. Two days of the week are allocated to conduct medical clinics and three days for cataract eye operations.Patients needing cataract eye operations, new spectacles etc are identified and directed for treatment and care.The hospital provides free checkups and medication as well as free
spectacles. Approximately 36 cataract eye operations are carried out per week. HelpAge incurs a cost of Rs. 5,000 per every eye operation performed. HelpAge has
also started construction of a new state of the art Eye Hospital in Sinsapa Road, Wellawatte, Colombo. This new hospital will be able to accommodate 72 cataract eye surgeries a week and will consist of bedding capacity for 36 patients.
