Tsunami Housing ...

Housing construction
Under the tsunami response programme HelpAge has planned for the construction of 250 houses for older people and their families who have lost their homes. The houses are to be constructed in 10 sites with each site consisting of 25 houses plus a community centre.
HelpAge Sri Lanka commenced its housing construction on the 22nd of March 2006 in Kandamodara, Tangalle, Sri Lanka for a cluster of 25 houses. The second construction began in Kaluwanchikudi, Batticaloa on 6th of April 2006. The cluster housing together with Older People’s Associations (OPA’s) will provide a chance for older people to experience communal living in an environment that is age friendly and caring to their exclusive needs.
150 houses are planned to be constructed in the east and the balance 100 in the south. This ratio is made on the basis of a higher number of tsunami affected older people in the East and differing needs resulting from the relative poverty and lack of development in the East. Further plots of land are currently being assessed and negotiations are taking place. All houses will consist of two bedrooms, living room, bathroom and kitchen along with pipe borne water and electricity facilities. Together with housing, livelihood assistance and skill development required to sustain a minimum income for the home owners will be provided by HelpAge.
